GM's Cruise will pay a 500,000 fine for submitting a false accident report

Engadget

GM's robotaxi unit Cruise has agreed to pay a 500,000 for submitting a false accident report as part of a deferred prosecution agreement. The US Justice Department (DoJ) said that Cruise failed to disclose vital details about a serious October 2023 accident in which one of its vehicles struck a pedestrian and dragged her 20 feet after she was hit by another vehicle. "Federal laws and regulations are in place to protect public safety on our roads. Companies with self-driving cars that seek to share our roads and crosswalks must be fully truthful in their reports to their regulators," said Martha Boersch, Chief of the Office of the U.S. Attorney's Criminal Division. Uber has yet to comment on the matter.

CEO of GM's Cruise robo taxi unit resigns amid U.S. safety review

The Japan Times

Kyle Vogt, the CEO of General Motors' robot-taxi unit Cruise, has resigned from the company a day after apologizing to staff as the company undergoes a safety review of its U.S. fleet. Vogt, 38, offered little in the way of explanation, stating simply "I have resigned from my position" in an email to staff on Sunday. Vogt founded Cruise in 2013. His decision follows weeks of turmoil at the unit, which had to pull all its vehicles from testing in the United States to conduct a safety review after an Oct. 2 accident that ended with one of Cruise's self-driving taxis dragging a pedestrian.

Uber shutters self-driving car program in Arizona following fatal crash

As you know, there's been a public call for the suspension of our self-driving program on Arizona's public roads and we have decided to refocus the bulk of our efforts in our engineering hubs in San Francisco and Pittsburgh. This is the best path forward as we work to get back on the road as soon as possible. To be clear, we are not shutting down our self-driving program. We are actively working to make our return to the road a reality with a goal of resuming operations in Pittsburgh this summer.
